Standby Power for Connecticut’s Winters
Connecticut residents know what it means to lose power. Nor’easters, tropical remnants, ice storms, and summer thunderstorms regularly knock out service across Fairfield and New Haven County — sometimes for days at a time. A properly installed standby generator changes that equation. It starts automatically when the power goes out and runs until utility power is restored.
PowerPlus Electric handles the electrical side of standby generator installation. We install the transfer switch, run the electrical connection from the generator to your panel, and ensure the entire system meets Connecticut code. We do the electrical hookup — generator servicing and repair are outside our scope. We work with propane and natural gas standby generators.
Generator installation typically ranges from $3,000 to $15,000 for the electrical work, depending on generator size, transfer switch type, and the complexity of the installation. Generator unit cost is separate. This is an estimate only — get a free on-site quote.
What PowerPlus Installs
Transfer switches — We install both automatic transfer switches (ATS) and manual interlock kits. An automatic transfer switch detects an outage and switches the load to generator power within seconds, without any action from you. A manual interlock is a simpler, less expensive option that requires you to throw the breaker.
Electrical connection — The generator connects to your home’s electrical system through a dedicated circuit or directly to the transfer switch. We run the wiring, size the connection correctly for the generator’s output, and make sure everything is protected and to code.
Sub-panel for critical loads — In some installations, we install a small sub-panel dedicated to critical circuits: refrigerator, furnace, lights, outlets. This allows a smaller generator to power what matters most without requiring a whole-house unit.
Brands We Work With
We install transfer switches and make electrical connections for any brand of standby generator: Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Cummins, and others. We’re not a Generac dealer — we don’t sell generator units. Your generator purchasing decision is yours. Our role is the installation.
Propane and Natural Gas — Not Diesel or Portable
We work with propane-fueled and natural gas-fueled standby generators. We do not install diesel generators or make permanent electrical connections for portable/transfer generators. If you’re unsure which fuel type is right for your property, we’ll discuss the options during your estimate.
After the Electrical Work: What You’ll Need
Generator installation has components beyond the electrical hookup — gas line connection (handled by a licensed plumber or gas fitter), foundation pad installation, and the generator unit itself. We coordinate with other trades when needed and can recommend reliable partners for the gas line work. Once all trades are complete, the system is tested and turned over.
When permits are required by Connecticut law, they are pulled by the licensed contractor.
