What We Handle in East Haven Emergencies
East Haven’s post-war housing stock — heavily concentrated in the 1950s and 1960s — presents a well-known and serious electrical hazard: Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels. These panels are documented for breaker failure and represent a significant share of our emergency calls in town:
- Federal Pacific panel failures: FPE Stab-Lok breakers are known to fail to trip under overload, creating fire risk. If your panel is FPE, an emergency call that seems like a simple breaker issue may be something more serious.
- No-trip breaker events: When a breaker should have tripped and didn’t, the downstream wiring and devices may have been subjected to dangerous overload. This needs immediate assessment.
- Complete or partial power loss: Sudden loss of power with no obvious cause in a 1950s–1960s home often points to the panel or service entrance.
- Burning smell from panel area: Any odor of burning plastic or hot metal from your electrical panel is an emergency — evacuate the immediate area and call us.
